Republic, what does this word mean in layman’s language. It means public thing, public matter or public affair. Today, being 26th January we Indians celebrate it as the Republic Day. India became independent on 15th August 1947 from the barriers of the British and was further divided into two countries, India and Pakistan. India which just came out from the beings of monarchy transformed itself into a democratic country. And for democracy to be practiced it requires certain set of rules and regulations which is what the constitution is. The constitution was framed on this very date on which we celebrate Republic Day. 26th January, 1950 was the day the constitution of India was implemented where there were rules and regulations regarding the civil matters. The constitution was initially drafted by the committee named the drafting committee with eight of its original members.

Dr.B.R Ambedkar being the chairman of it. Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, K.M. Munshi, Govind Ballabh Pant, Debi Prasad Khaitan, Sir Syed Muhammed Saadullah, N Gopalaswamy Ayyangar, BL Mitter being the other 7 of them. All of them being the best in their fields and the top lawyers of those times.

Our Indian constitution is the lengthiest with 395 articles in 22 parts and 8 schedules at the time of commencement. And today it has increased to 448 articles in 25 parts and 12 scheduled. There have been 103 amendments in the Indian constitution so far. Being the latest the Citizen Amendment Act

India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad took the very oath of being assigned to his duties on this day. This day was chosen on account of the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day. This day is celebrated with a remembrance of the soldiers who martyred themselves in the quest of protecting the nation by the prime minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyothi at the India Gate in New Delhi. There is a grand parade at the capital of the country with the president addressing it. Many foreign delegates being the chief guest address the parade as well. With 2020 we have Brazil’s president Mr Jair Bolsonaro attending the event. There are various displays of Indian army, Navy and Air forces with the best of the defence armour being showcased at this event. There are displays of traditional attire of each state with different significance of each. It’s a watch worthy show. Being the discipline, determination and likes of the country being showcased at one place.

Awards and medals of bravery are given to the people from armed forces and also to the civilians.

This Republic Day is celebrated all over the country from educational institutions to corporate offices. The flag is hoisted at colonies, schools, colleges etc. and there is a show of their love the country in their particular field. There are marches and parades in a sense to show the unity of the country.

Republic Day is thus a special occasion every Indian has to cherish to remember that we live in a free country with freedom of basic sense of living until it’s for the betterment of ourselves and not for the violence against anyone.
