The Preamble to the Constitution of India is a brief introductory statement. Preamble to the constitution is like the Preface which highlights the constitution. Preamble to the constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949 by the Constituent Assembly and came into effect on 26 January 1950, celebrated as Republic day in India.

The preamble of the Indian Constitution is based on the objective Resolution, drafted and moved by Jawaharlal Nehru on 13th December, 1946 and passed by the constituent Assembly.

The Preamble to the constitution sets out guideline

  1. to guide people of the nation,
  2. to present the principles of the Constitution and
  3. to indicate the source from which the document derives its authority and meaning.
  4. The hopes and aspirations of the people are described in it.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens

 JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

 LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

 EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all

 FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

 IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this  26th day of November 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.
