Read Importance of Ashura and its reasons

One of the important Ibadah is to Fast on the Day of Ashura.

Prophet Muhammad ??? ???? ???? ???? used to fast on this day before migration to Madina, and the Fasting on this day is assumed to be mandatory before the obligation of Fasting in Ramadan but After the Obligation of Fasting in Ramadan, Fasting on the day of Ashura is Mustahab.

Here we will discuss some of the narrations in which Virtues of Ashura’s fasting are mentioned.

Obligation of Fasting on Ashura before Ramadan

Narrated `Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (?) ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura’, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (‘Ashura’) or not.(Sahih Al Bukhari 2001)

Forgiveness of last year’s sins

Abu Qatadah narrated that :the Prophet said: “Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins of) the year before it.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 752)

Fasting on 9th Muharram to Oppose Jews

Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (r.a.) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) fasted on ‘Ashura’and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘If I live to see the next year, Insha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.’ But it so happened that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) passed away before the next year came.”
[Reported by Muslim, 1916]

Those who didn’t fast on 9th can fast on 11th also. It is better to fast on 9th or 11th along with 10th Muharram to Oppose Jews.
